Is French Guiana safe? Honestly: it is neither a no-go zone nor a place where you can switch off entirely. This is a French department and an EU territory, with French policing, French hospitals and French emergency numbers, and most visitors spend their whole stay in Cayenne, Rémire-Montjoly and along the coast without trouble. It is also tropical, with long forest borders, strong ocean currents and mosquito-borne illness.
Here is what the official advisories say, where to read them, and which precautions matter day to day. Advice changes, so check the current advisory for your own nationality before you travel.
What the official advisories actually say
- The US State Department rates French Guiana Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, its lowest level. Petty street crime occurs in the major cities; violent crime occurs but is rare. It advises avoiding isolated areas after dark.
- The UK FCDO says crime levels are low, but that there is a risk of being robbed in some areas of Cayenne, especially after dark, and advises avoiding isolated places including secluded beaches.
- Global Affairs Canada advises normal security precautions, mentions pickpocketing in urban areas, and is the most explicit about the interior and about driving after dark.
France’s own Conseils aux voyageurs covers foreign countries, so there is no French advisory for French Guiana. Official French information comes from the prefecture and the health agency ARS Guyane.
Everyday precautions in Cayenne and Rémire-Montjoly
- Do not display expensive jewellery, cameras or large amounts of cash.
- Take a taxi rather than walking after using an ATM, as the FCDO suggests.
- Keep car windows closed and doors locked in traffic, a State Department recommendation.
- Leave nothing visible in a parked car, on the beach or on a chair.
- Avoid isolated streets and empty beaches after dark, and steer clear of demonstrations.
Where you stay matters. Montabo, La Madeleine and Rémire-Montjoly are calm residential areas with parking. Kaz’Alizés sits in a quiet Rémire-Montjoly residence with a pool, a hundred metres from the sand (Airbnb, Booking). To walk into town rather than drive at night, the creole house L’écrin tropical puts the Place des Palmistes and the covered market on foot.
Where more care is genuinely needed
The interior and the border regions are a different context from the coastal towns. Global Affairs Canada notes that illegal gold mining takes place in the Amazon interior, that travellers could find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that permits may be required for some rainforest areas. The land borders are long and remote: the Oyapock faces Brazil, the Maroni faces Suriname. For border towns, river trips or deep forest, use a licensed operator, share your itinerary, and read the current advisory first.
For most holidays this does not arise. Cayenne, Rémire-Montjoly, Roura and the RN1 towards Kourou are ordinary travel. Driving, night travel, beaches and rivers
Driving is the risk most travellers underestimate. Canada says major roads are well maintained, but that remote areas lack adequate lighting and signage and that travel after dark should be avoided because of hazardous conditions and reckless motorcyclists. The FCDO notes that French law applies, including a blood alcohol limit of 0.05 percent. Kourou is about an hour from Cayenne by the RN1, Saint-Laurent du Maroni about three hours: day trips that should start early rather than end late.
Beaches here are wide, wild and mostly unsupervised. Canada highlights strong tidal changes and currents, and warns against swimming alone or diving into unknown water. Rivers look calm, carry current, and the water is opaque. Ask locally before entering water you do not know. A private pool answers the question neatly: Kaz Toti in Montabo has its own pool, a walk from the beach where turtles nest in season (Airbnb, Booking). Near nesting turtles, keep your distance and use no white light.
Mosquitoes, sun and wildlife
The UK’s travel health service, NaTHNaC, states that under the International Health Regulations a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for all travellers aged one year or over. The vaccine must be given at a registered centre, so plan ahead. NaTHNaC also lists dengue, chikungunya and Zika, notes that antimalarials are advised for border areas and river travel while Cayenne is low risk, and stresses bite avoidance day and night. Canada adds Oropouche virus and rabies in bats.

Practically, use repellent, cover up at dawn and dusk, sleep in air conditioning or under a net, and keep doors shut. Every property we manage is air conditioned in the bedrooms. The sun is stronger than the cloud cover suggests, so pack high-factor sunscreen and a hat.
Emergencies: the numbers to keep
The emergency system is the French one and the numbers are free from any phone. The FCDO states that hospitals and GP practices are equivalent to mainland France. The main hospital is the Centre Hospitalier de Cayenne Andrée Rosemon.

If in doubt, dial 112. The FCDO recommends UK and EU visitors bring a GHIC or EHIC for state healthcare, while stressing it does not replace travel insurance.
